Cooling engines are essential if you're using engines. When using Steam Engines, they will only overheat if there is an excess of energy when exporting energy. Over time a combustion engine will overheat, causing them to explode and destroy blocks in a small radius.
To cool these engines, connect waterproof pipes to the engine. Then make a tank and fill it with water and connect a wooden pipe to the tank, and connect waterproof piping from the wooden pipe to the Combustion Engines. Since the Redstone Engine doesn't overheat it is best to connect one to the wooden pipe and use it to pump water from the tank to the engine.
Another way to get water to your engines would be to have a pump connected to a Waterproof Teleport pipe, feeding the water directly into the Combustion engine. This is a more efficient way if you obtain water from a lake or Ocean Biome as it would have next to unlimited water. This would save you from refilling your tank regularly. If left for a long time, you can eventually dry up a river or cause a massive "dip" in the ocean level.
