Glowstone is both a dust and a block, but the block doesn't do much other than light things up. Glowstone dust, as well as doing all the vanilla minecraft uses, is used in the making of the Philosopher's stone, which is used in the creation of alchemical coal, then mobius fuel, so on and so forth.
