Coal can be macerated into Coal Dust.
Railcraft
With the Railcraft Addon, Coal can be made into Coal Coke.
Coal Coke is created by cooking Coal in a Coke Oven. It is a highly effective fuel, essentially producing double the heat content of the Coal require to create it. Coal has a heat content of 1600, whereas Coke has a heat content of 3200. Meaning it will last twice as long in all applications. It's primary use is in the creation of Steel (not implemented yet), but it also makes a good fuel for the Tunnel Bore or for your Furnaces and Generators/Engines (IC2/Buildcraft).
